The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasized the importance of the Mexican working people who emigrate to the United States to support the economy of that country during an event in Oaxaca. She stressed the support and solidarity that Mexican migrants will always receive and assured that they will be welcomed with open arms if they decide to return to Mexico.
Sheinbaum's reaction comes after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security revoked a directive from former President Joe Biden that prohibited the detention of migrants in U.S. schools, colleges, and churches. This decision was made following Trump's rise to power and his promise to carry out a major deportation campaign of migrants in the U.S.
The Mexican government committed to protecting its nationals in the United States through the consulates and offering support through the ‘Mexico Embraces You’ program in cases of deportation or voluntary return to the country. The mass deportations announced by Trump worry Mexico, especially since Mexicans represent about half of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. and their remittances are key to the Mexican economy.
Sheinbaum highlighted that the United States would not be the same without the Mexicans who contribute to its economy, whether in agriculture, services, or other sectors. She emphasized the work and generosity of Mexican workers in the U.S. and reaffirmed Mexico's commitment to supporting its citizens abroad amid the migration challenges.
